A Walk in the Redwoods

I went to Murphys, CA.  A short drive from Murphys we found Calaveras Big Trees where there is a grove of Sequoias.  Walking amongst the redwoods (both coastal and Sequoias) gives you a sense of serenity.  My Father had a favorite poet by the name of Don Blanding.  I've copied one of his poems to go with my pictures.

Conversion and Conviction

The tall gray man with the thoughtful face
And his frail gray wife came to the place

Where the oldest and greatest living tree

Stood in its earth-god majesty,
A monolith recording time

In tree-rings sounding their silent chime.
Three thousand years had marked their score
With more than half-a-millennium more

Since a small seed fell to the waiting earth
And stirred in the miracle of birth.

Fire and lightning had left their mark

On the stricken limbs and the rust-red bark;

Raw new scars and scars annealed
That time and a living faith had healed.

Slowly the eyes of the tall gray man
Measured the height and the massive span

of the ancient tree in stark amaze;
Tears and wonder were in his gaze,

"Mary," he said, and his words were shod
With awe, "Now I believe in God."

Mary's eyes went swift around
Where gilia flowers strewed the ground

Like notes of pearl from a silent psalm.
She placed one bloom in the man's broad palm,

A jewel of beauty . . . gift of the clod,
"This makes me believe in God."

Alcatraz - A Day on the Rock

9/11 The Day After
or
Freedom is Like a Flower

Pictures were taken at Alcatraz on 9/11/2012

Words were written 9/12/2012 after I heard about the tragedy in Libya

Freedom is like a flower

growing in a prison wall,

Watching fear of that which is different,

timelessly fall.

Making room for the blossoming beauty

that freedom brings to all.

Spread the seeds far and wide

then watch ignorance fall.

Oh beautiful for spacious skies,

these words we hear today

The walls of ignorance must fall, the beauty that freedom brings,

like the flower in a wall must stay

Keep this thought and nourish it,

make it a resounding call.

Freedom is like a beautiful, fragile flower

growing in a prison wall.

Garden Party

Garden Party

(I changed some of the words of Ricky Nelson's "Garden Party" to fit my needs.  Sorry Ricky but the words didn't fit my Garden Party)

I took these pictures at a Garden Party in Watsonville.  The ladies of the San Jose Garden club let me join them occasionally.  I've enjoyed every trip I've been on with them.  The menu for the luncheon was Veggie Lasagna, fresh artichokes, fresh tomato salad and for dessert we had our choice of apricot or berry pie.  Wonderful lunch

I went to a garden party

To reminisce with Paulie's friends

A chance to share old memories

And play our songs again

When I got to the garden party,

They all knew my name (had on a name tag)

No one recognized me,

I really did look the same.

But it's all right now, I learned my lesson well.

You see, ya can't please everyone, so ya got to please yourself.

People came from miles around, everyone was there

Zelda brought her camera so there was magic in the air

'n' over in the corner, much to my surprise

A bit of heaven in a tray was the lasagna and apricot pies.

But it's all right now, I learned my lesson well.
You see, ya can't please everyone, so ya got to please yourself.

And that's what a Garden Party did for me - it pleased my-inner-self.

A Tour of Stanford University

A Tour of Stanford

Everywhere you look at Stanford -
 you'll see the Hoover Tower,

The message of peace, gives it, all of its power,

But when I take a walk around Stanford, which I love to do,

It's the arches and columns I love to see,

and the fountains too.

Of course seeing Memorial Church is worth the trip

And the Old Union

and Encina Hall will also make you flip.

What beauty - What grace bless these hallowed halls,

What great people are studying and working behind the golden walls.

I was lucky enough to work at Stanford University for 16 years.  Some days the highlight of my day was taking a walk around campus, some days it was meeting all of the wonderful people who worked on campus.  While working on campus, I looked forward to going to work every day.
